Occupational Therapist

Reports to:      Director of Student and Special Education Services


Job Goal:        The Occupational Therapist, acting as a consultant, will provide informal and formal assessments for children who are referred.


The Occupational Therapist will prepare an individualized program plan based on the information gained in formal and informal assessments.


The Occupational Therapist will provide training for teachers and aides in basic Occupational Therapy techniques, philosophies, and activities. In-service education will be provided for staff to define the role of the consultant and to explain the areas of fine motor and perceptual development and sensory integration.




1.      To provide formal and informal assessments including:

a.       Feeding skills

b.      Dressing and hygiene skills

c.       Fine motor development (reach, grasp, release, writing skills

d.      Visual-perceptual-motor development (visual perception; visual motor)

e.       Sensory integration (tactile discrimination, integration of both sides of the body, crossing the midline, motor planning).


2.      The Occupational Therapist will be recommended for writing an initial assessment report with recommended activities included for students. Objectives will be formulated with the teacher, to be included in the student’s Individual Education Plan (IEP).


3.      The Occupational Therapist will explain, demonstrate, and monitor the recommendations suggested in the assessment report to the teachers and aides.


4.      The Occupational Therapist will suggest and/or provide adaptive equipment necessary for independence in activities of daily living (e.g. hand splinting, adaptation of clothing with Velcro fasteners, explanation and introduction of dressing, feeding, and writing aids).


5.      The Occupational Therapist will provide final assessment reports on the students referred by teachers, including objectives achieved since the initial assessment report, and recommendations for the upcoming school year.


6.      In-service education will be provided for staff to define the roll of the consultant and to explain the areas of fine motor and perceptual development and sensory integration.


7.      The Occupational Therapist will work closely with the Physical Therapist, Speech Pathologist, and Teacher in creating a comprehensive and integrated program to maximize each child’s development.





·         Graduate with a B.S. or M.S. from an accredited college or university, which meets the requirements set by the university and the American Occupational Therapy Association.

·         Successful completion of the American Occupational Therapy Association registration examination.

·         Demonstrating proficient knowledge of child development with emphasis in anatomical and neurological maturation and its influence on development.

·         An educational background in Kinesthesiology, Anatomy, Neuroanatomy, Neurology, Physiology, Physical Pathology, Psychiatric Occupational Therapy, Sensory Integration.

·         A minimum of six months clinical practice.

·         Ability to work cooperatively and effectively with educational personnel.


Terms of Employment: Work days and salary as per collective bargaining agreement.


Evaluation:  Performance will be evaluated by the Director of Student and Special Education Services.
